A Family

The man smiled,
The woman gathered the beads,
The boys rushed about,
With their toys unsold;
And the child looked
At the juicy mango seeds.

Amitabh Bachchan declared
From his huge hoarding above-
‘You can never go wrong with the diamonds’;
The light turned
And I drove past the green.

The dinner waited on the table,
The desserts were sumptuous,
The music warm and soft,
The wine dry.

It began to rain,
Thunder and flash,
The beads glistened,
The child curled,
The smile returned;

And a family slept,
By the road-side.
